Caribbean nurses and other health practitioners have mixed stories to tell about their career development in the NHS during the early years. Most completed their initial training, qualified, and went on to do further training so they could move into more specialist and challenging fields of work. Many received help and support within the NHS. But there were also many – particularly, but not only, in the nursing profession – who felt that because they were from the Caribbean, they had to overcome discrimination and prejudice. However, despite the difficulties, Caribbean health professionals progressed through the NHS, sometimes making history on their way. |
