Most Caribbean nurses, doctors and health practitioners started work with the NHS as soon as they arrived in Britain. Several people in this book joined the NHS as trainee nurses. Their first few weeks and months were often exhausting. Pay was low, hours were long and the work and training were intensive. Some were disappointed to find they were not doing the work or training they had expected but they persevered. Others arrived in Britain, and then looked for work in the NHS. Many first-generation Caribbean recruits were the first in their hospital. Most received help and support from matrons, sisters and patients. |
