Erena Kydd
Erena Kydd was born in St Vincent and went to school in Georgetown. In 1959, aged 22 and seeking adventure, she travelled to England by boat. She started work as an auxiliary at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Despite many difficulties and challenges, she remained committed to the health service until her retirement in 1992. She has been active in community work and as a school governor. She continues to do voluntary work with the blind.

Thelma Lewis
Thelma Lewis was born in Guyana. She attended primary and secondary school, gaining her senior Cambridge certificate. She trained and worked as a nurse in Guyana. In 1955, aged 22, she came over to England by boat, on the SS Colombie, to work in Houghton Hospital, Epsom. Initially she worked as a nurse in mental health. In 1956 she switched to medical technology, qualifying and working as a laboratory technician at St George's Hospital until 1968. She later specialised in haematology. She is now retired but is closely connected to the Roman Catholic Church and does voluntary work in St Vincent.

Siburnie Ramharry
Siburnie Ramharry was born in Guyana. After leaving high school, she worked as a laboratory assistant. In 1962, aged 19, she left Guyana for Scotland to train as a dietician. She travelled by plane. She trained in Edinburgh and qualified in 1966. She became a basic grade dietician, and later a nutritionist, building up experience in the UK and the Caribbean. In 1980 she became dietetic manager with Liverpool Health Authority and in 1988 became manager of the Charing Cross and Westminster group of hospitals. Since 1993 she has been a senior primary care dietician with East Pembridge Mid-Surrey Primary Care Trust.
