Daisy V V Anson
Daisy V V Anson was born in Jamaica. She attended Campbell Castle Primary School but did not go onto high school. She left school aged 15. In 1956 she came to England, travelling on board ship. She went to Nottingham where she worked in the Sherwood Hospital laundry department and later went into hospital catering, cooking for up to 300 people. In 1975 she returned to the Caribbean.

Nelson Auguste
Nelson Auguste was born in St Lucia. He left school aged 16 and worked in a sugar cane factory. In 1960, aged 20, he left St Lucia for England. He worked in factories, on building sites and as a gravedigger. In 1972 he began work as a general porter in the National Heart Hospital, London. He subsequently became a theatre porter and ultimately supervisor. He was nominated shop steward of his union and was active defending workers' rights. He retired in 1994 and is currently treasurer for the St Lucia Association.

Olivine Benjamin
Olivine Benjamin was born in Jamaica, where she attended Catholic school. In 1965, when she was 16, she travelled to England by plane. She worked in a factory for about two years. When she was 18, she obtained a job as a nursing auxiliary in the Northern General Hospital. She retired in 2000, having worked in the NHS for 34 years. |
